My Thailand relocation stack
Moving abroad attracts a lot of tools you don't need. This page is the opposite: the handful that measurably saved money or removed stress during a Thailand move, each with an honest note on when it's worth it — and when it isn't.
💸 Moving your money
Wise
Money transfersBanks quietly take 3–5% of an international transfer through bad exchange rates. Wise gives you the real mid-market rate with a transparent fee (~0.5–1%). On the $10k+ you'll move for deposits and show-funds, that difference is hundreds of dollars.
Skip it if: you're only ever moving pocket money — the savings scale with the amount.

SafetyWing
Budget starter coverThe cheaper on-ramp: nomad insurance you can start before you fly and keep month-to-month while you settle in and shop for a long-term policy. Lower premiums, lighter coverage — know the difference.
Skip it if: you have ongoing conditions or want comprehensive inpatient cover — pay for the fuller policy.

NordVPN
VPNLess about privacy, more about practicality: home banking apps and streaming services get twitchy when you suddenly log in from Bangkok. A VPN with a home-country IP keeps your bank, broker and Netflix behaving. Set it up before you fly, while accounts still trust you.
Skip it if: you've already moved your banking to border-friendly fintechs and don't stream geo-locked content.

Different moves need different tools. The three setups we'd actually run:
The DTV nomad
Remote worker, 25–45, income from abroad
- Wise — show-funds & monthly transfers
- SafetyWing — monthly health cover
- NordVPN — home banking access
The family move
Couple + kids (and often a dog)
- Wise — deposits, school fees, big transfers
- SafetyWing → full policy — bridge cover, then comprehensive
- Pet Relocation Kit — if paws are flying too
The 50+ retiree
O-A/O-X route, pension or savings income
- Wise — moving the ฿800k show-funds
- OIC-approved insurance — mandatory for O-A
- NordVPN — pension & broker logins
🚫 What we'd skip
- Bank wires for the big transfer. The 3–5% hiding in the exchange rate is the single most expensive "convenience" of the whole move.
- Annual insurance paid upfront before you've landed. Month one teaches you what cover you actually need — don't prepay a year on a guess.
- Airport SIM & currency-exchange counters. Both charge you for being tired after a 12-hour flight. Sort connectivity and cash access before you board.
❓ Quick answers
Do I need a VPN to live in Thailand?
For daily life, no. For keeping your home bank, broker and streaming accounts from locking you out when you log in from a Thai IP — yes, and it's much easier to set up before you fly, while your accounts still trust your location.
Is SafetyWing enough for a retirement (O-A) visa?
No. The O-A visa requires insurance from the OIC-approved list with minimum cover (฿40k outpatient / ฿400k inpatient). Nomad plans like SafetyWing don't qualify — they're for bridging or non-retirement routes.
Can't I just use my home bank to move money over?
You can, but a typical bank wire costs 3–5% between fees and the exchange-rate markup — $300–500 on a $10,000 transfer. Mid-market services like Wise do the same job for roughly $50–100.
When should I set all this up?
Before you fly. Wise verification can take days, insurance should start the day you land (not the day you remember), and VPNs are best installed while you're still at your home IP.
